Job interviews are what most people never get used to. If you have a job interview soon and you are stressed, the first thing you should do is not to think about the aftermath. Focus on the interview and your resume and on what you need to know to take the job.

Basically, an interview is where you try to get the job. Moreover, given the limited amount of time an interview lasts, all you can do is appear. It`s impossible for the interviewers to learn who you really are in 60 minutes. On the other hand you can appear like the one they are looking to hire.

The first thing that enters into play is your appearance as far as it shapes the interviewer’s first impression of you.

Studies show that an unfavorable first impression is enough for a negative outcome. Wear clothes that fit you and the job you are applying for. Shoes play an important role in the way you look as well, it pays to invest in a good pair of shoes.

With a positive first impression in his mind, the next question your employer will try to answer himself is whether you are technically fit for the job or not. At the same time he will attempt to learn as much as possible about your personality through your gestures. At this point you are called to appear qualified and act in such a way as to betray a strong personality. Your personality counts, sometimes it counts even more than what you appear to know.

Self-confidence is an important aspect of your character.

To appear self confident shake hands firmly at the beginning and keep eye contact with the employer from the beginning till the end of the interview. Pay attention to your posture as far as bad posture makes you appear as lacking self-confidence.

The vocabulary you use to answer the questions counts as well.

When phrasing your answers try to keep it simple, use elaborate language only when it confers particularly well what you mean. Excessive use of academic terms makes your answers not easy to understand. Incomprehensible is the last thing you want to be in a job interview. Additionally, you must avoid at all costs behaviors that betray at any rate a lack of interest for the job. Such behaviors are arriving late at the interview or short answers like ok or so so which betray carelessness.

As for proving that you got the right technical knowledge to get the job it is strongly recommended that you read something about the company beforehand. With a clear company profile in your mind you can pick up those achievements and experiences of yours that do fit particularly well the profile. It will make you sound perfect. It is also important to let the interviewer know that you are willing to learn.
At the end of the interview you might ask few questions about details.

Before leaving don’t forget to say thank you and shake hands firmly with the interviewer.

Perhaps one of the most important factors in deciding whether attending graduate school is right for you is to ask yourself if you are truly passionate about the graduate degree you will be pursuing. Completing a graduate degree requires an incredible amount of work and a massive investment of your time so it’s vitally important that you genuinely enjoy what you will be studying. If you are simply studying something that you feel will benefit your income and career, but which you aren’t really interested in, then you’re probably attending grad school for all the wrong reasons. Remember, grad programs are different from undergrad programs, you’ll be focused on a specific field of study, delving deeply into details. If you aren’t passionate about the field, your grad school experience is likely to be tortuous.

Don’t Go to Grad School If:

A Degree Won’t Lead to Career Advancement or a Higher Income

Unless you are at a place in life where you can afford to complete a graduate degree simply for pleasure, it’s not a good idea to attend grad school if you know that it will have little effect on your career advancement or earning potential. Graduate degrees require a huge investment, and they are not something you should invest in if you know that it’s unlikely to pay off.

If you’re unsure whether or not a graduate degree will help your career, complete some research and talk to professionals from within your field to get an idea for how important it really is. Ask people who hold positions that you’re interested in achieving if they think graduate school is worth the time, effort and cost. Relocating to a new place is becoming a common trend since not all states are affected by the recession in the same way. Job seekers would naturally want to relocate to a state that has more opportunities for employment.

However, relocating to a new place also has its risks. Avoid the problems of job-related relocation by asking yourself these important questions:

What’s my motive?

The recession has made life difficult, not just on the professional level but on the personal one as well. If you’re thinking about relocating, it’s important for you be aware of your real motives. Your job relocation might just be a convenient excuse to escape personal problems. If you are running away from personal problems, you’re probably wasting time, effort and money. Remember that problems don’t vanish unless you solve them.

Accept a job relocation only if it truly gives you the best chance of improving your current situation.

Will I have a future?

If the job is just about paying the bills, then relocating may be too big a risk. Relocating means leaving people you know, spending money to be able to transfer and, in some cases, selling what you already have. If you pursue a job that has no opportunity for career growth, then your job transfer move might not be worth it.

Do I have all the bases covered?

Relocating will cost you money. The new job you’re eyeing might provide a higher salary than you have today. But until that first paycheck comes, do you already have enough resources to cover the cost of living in the new place?

If you’re seriously considering job relocation, get that head start by saving as much money as you can now. Doing so will help ease your transition in the new place.

What We Can Learn From Santa About Looking for Work

In 1986 Robert Fulghum published the number one best seller, “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten.” I recall how the book “spoke to me” at a time when my life had recently been turned up-side-down and I was having to deal with things that were totally unfamiliar to me. I found that if I could relate the unknown to something for which I had experience (something that turned out positive) it was easier to cope, and learn, and accomplish my goals.

Looking for employment and finding my way in a world full of professionals who seemed to have some secret guidebook on how to successfully manage their careers, was one of those unfamiliar things that was thrust upon me. As with Fulghum’s book, I found familiar life experiences – for example, child rearing, planning a trip, or dating to be somewhat analogous to my tasks at hand. And as I found employment and began molding my career, I discovered that I could help others do the same by connecting them to analogies in their own life that would help dispel some of the mystery – and anxiety – about job search and career management.

In that regard, I am creating this book review to tell you about two delightful children’s books I discovered a few years ago, which were written by Stephen Krensky: “How Santa Got His Job” and “How Santa Lost His Job.”  This has been an extremely trying year for professionals. Many have lost their jobs and many have spent an unprecedented amount of time (28.5 weeks, on average) trying to find new employment. When faced with the unfamiliar (and somewhat scary) reality of the job market, why not turn to something/someone more familiar for guidance. And who is better known than Santa Claus?

I gleaned from Krensky’s books 10 valuable, yet simple, lessons about finding employment and a satisfying career taught by a jolly old fat man in a red suit:

  1. Identify your interests, abilities and values
  2. Sample different jobs
  3. Recognize when something is not a good fit
  4. Accept that some people will not like you or the way you work
  5. Keep your eyes open for new opportunities
  6. Don’t internalize failure – learn from it
  7. Build and nurture a strong professional network
  8. Don’t go it alone – work and problem solve as a team
  9. Leverage your strengths and work on improving your weaknesses
  10. Remember that no job is perfect – always be prepared with the right tools and resources

People often feel much more comfortable when they are being talked to on a very personal level. If you walked into a store and were greeting in a professional, yet friendly, manner, you’d likely feel pretty good about the place. The tone of your emails should be the same professional, friendly, and more informative than pushy. This will likely cause people to eventually get excited about your message.

  1. Do not bombard your list with emails.

This is an important business marketing strategy that is often ignored. Many online marketers send daily emails to their list, all under the guise of trying to gain brand recognition. If you built your list with a single or double opt-in requirement (and you did, right?), you are not doing anything wrong legally. But the term spammer is thrown around quite loosely these days. Even if you are not spamming anyone, once you get that label it’s hard to overcome. Much like in real life, a bad reputation can be a big obstacle to your overall goals. As long as you keep #1 and #2 in mind, a weekly email should be more than enough.

The goal of an email marketing campaign is forging a lasting and very personal relationship with the people on your list. Contrary to what many marketers believe, the goal should NOT be to get people to immediately buy what you’re selling. Keeping your emails informative in nature and truly adding value to each one will eventually brand you as an expert in your industry.

Once you get that label, your subscribers will not only be more receptive to your products or services, but they may even reach out to when they need something.

And, after all, isn’t this why you started your business in the first place? Email marketing is just a simpler and more personal way of doing so, with a much larger reach and on a more personal level.

The federal government offers various types of grants for students who are attaining their masters but have a problem coping with the college fees. These grants may be funded by the government or may be given by the individual institutions to the needy students. The federally aided graduate school grants are basically given to people who are attaining their masters in subjects like engineering, health sciences, economics, arts, humanities, social sciences and more. These grants have to be earned through the FAFSA or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA have to approve that you are financially needy to get these types of graduate school grants.

Another type of federal graduate school grants is the US DOE Fellowship. These are mainly available for the students who are pursuing master’s degree in the arts subjects like history, anthropology, humanities or social sciences. These are given to the students and can be renewed every year based upon the academic progress of the student.

Apart from these graduate school grants there are a number of graduate school grants which are available from the individual institutions like:

Hertz Foundation which offers grants to students of engineering and physical sciences.

Woodrow Wilson Fellowship which is available mainly to the female students of humanities and social sciences.

Scholarships for Minorities are graduate school grants which are given to the minority students like the African Americans.

American Psychological Association MFP which is given to the minority students who are pursuing higher studies in psychology.

These are some tips of getting the graduate school grants. Many more grants are available based on the fields like health care, teachers and research fellowships.

You Are What You Consume

This is pretty straightforward but many people fail to be too conscious of exactly what is going in their minds. Books, music, movies and art all have profound effects on our mind. They change the very chemistry by inducing emotions. It is why you must choose what is allowed to go into your mind. You must be the gatekeeper. You must control what goes in least the product is allowed to run amok.

In choosing materials for growth, you must ask yourself a few questions. This is what I ask myself when I buy a book, CD, or movie:

Does this resonate positive emotions or negative ones?

Is the person that created this a person I would like to know in real life?

Does this product fit into my life plan, my goals, my idea for what I want my future to look like?

Will this product engage me, make me learn, make me open my mind to new ideas?

The reality is that everything you consume, every conversation you have, every image your brain sees effects your future. Often I wondered when I was young why certain people seemed to ignore me when I spoke of something negative or in a cynical tone. The answer I know now – they were filtering their reality. They were keeping their mind, the world around them, exactly how they wanted it. Think of it as pruning the roses.

You are the only person that can allow something in your mind.

So let it be the stuff you ACTUALLY WANT in your mind.

 

Who Is Right And Who Is Wrong? Subjective VS Objective Truth

I believe Hitler was a great person, the holocaust never happened and that fathers may throw battery acid on their daughters faces when they misbehave. Who are you to tell me I am wrong?

Many people take a subjective view of the truth and believe each person shapes their own reality according to his or her own terms. Thus whatever they believe is true is right for them and you can’t tell them they are wrong. However I argue this subjective view of reality is not only delusional but false for the following reasons:

1) It directly contradicts the generally accepted view of the truth which is:  The correct representation of objective reality (the bigger reality we’re all a part of).

2) If people do in fact create their own truths than Galileo’s claim that the sun is the center of the solar system is not true for everyone but just for those who want to believe it. Those who deny the holocaust happened and those who believe the earth is flat are correct and so are those who take opposing views. However this is a fallacy of logic because a statement can’t be both true and false at the same time.

See the problem?

The truth is not personal, subjective and shaped by our own preferences and desires; just because we believe something doesn’t always make it correct. By looking at the above examples, we clearly see that the notion that each person creates their own truth doesn’t hold up under close examination. Instead, we discover the truth by asking questions, seeking new knowledge and keeping an open mind.

eBook Review: The Zero Hour Workweek

In this post I would like to take the time to review a book written by Illuminated Mind author Jonathan Mead.  It is called the Zero Hour Workweek and you can download it here for free.  As a relatively new blogger looking for independence myself, it is hard to begin prioritizing the tasks to be done in order to make the site successful, to get feedback, and really feel like I am helping someone.  

You may ask after seeing books that promise workweeks of 4 hours or 2 hours, “how the hell can anyone work 0 hours a week and get paid enough to live?”  Well, that isn’t exactly the point, according to Jonathan.  To do something like he does, he argues, most people could consider “work,” and he does a lot of it.  The difference between the work Jonathan does and the work you might do, is that it doesn’t feel like work to him.  Nowhere in the book does he say slow down, or be lazy, or success will come if you think about it, or any popular LoA mantras.  

What exactly does Jonathan say he does for 0 hours a week that makes him a sustainable income?

“The person you want to be is the Business Owner Who Blogs to Build Relationships, Gives Value, and Qualifies Potential Buyers.”

Notice he never says you want to be the ultra mastermind guru who analyzes traffic patterns, constantly checks how to get more traffic, or tries to find some clever tricks to get more people to visit.  You will lose with that strategy, he says.  You will waste a lot of time, and he admits that he wasted a lot of time doing such things as well.

Instead, the ultimate value of your site is based on the ultimate value you hold for yourself.    The main point you must realize in order to start on the path of “getting paid to be you” (the tagline of the book), is that success in the field that you choose comes from inside you.  Once you realize your own worth and value to the world, and once you couple it with skills you believe you’ve been naturally born with, then you will be ready to be a person of value to others.  It really is not a direct way of looking at things, I know.  It is one of the hardest but most important ideas in the Personal Development community because it has been adopted from ancient wisdom and seems illogical at first.  If you have questions about exactly what I mean by this I would love to explain it further somewhere else other than this post.  I’ll put it simply:

You cannot force people to pay you to be yourself.  You must believe that you really have something special to offer and then, probably very slowly, the people that need you, or want you, or just want to be near you, will become magnetically attracted to your being.  Another way to call it is intrinsic value you have for yourself – that you are all you need and nothing else.  No fancy cars or homes.  Just you.

The Zero Hour Workweek gives a brief story of Jonathan’s path to realizing what he could do everyday without ever feeling like it was work and he also gives a nice little exercise to find that passion for yourself.  I’ll give you the pleasure of reading that for yourself 🙂

Also, he gives some examples of people you can look towards as mentors – other successful bloggers on the Self Improvement path and why they stand out from the rest of the pack.  This was probably my least favorite part of the book because I felt it broke up the momentum of his story – I would have left it until the end at least.  Nonetheless, I did find some new bloggers to find inspiration from.
